Here’s a nice IDed grouping out of an Indiana estate. Named to a Richard “Butch” C. Webb from the small town of Kewanna, Indiana. Richard was born in 1935 in the even smaller town of Fulton, Indiana. He attended and graduated from the local Grass Creek High School. He soon after moved to Kewanna with the rest of the family. Too young to enlist in WWII, and still too young to forge his papers, Butch joined up when he could and was an Engineman 3rd Class by the time he was discharged. He was in service during the Korean War and received a China Service Medal for serving on a vessel that aided in Chinese operations within Chinese territorial waters. He was an electrician in civilian life, being well acquainted with the trades. Butch, also known as Dick, was awarded 2 battle stars on his Korean Service Medal, a United Nations Korean Service medal, an aforementioned China Service Medal, a Korean War Service medal, a Navy Good Conduct Medal, and a National Defense Medal. The top row of ribbons is upside down, but I have not flipped them right side up; as it was registered in his estate sale, I imagine that maybe his kids or grandkids flipped them while playing war. Webb’s helmet is a front seam fixed bale McCord, sporting a General Fibre liner with HBT webbing and a double-wire sweatband. It is painted a very light blue with a “2” painted on the front. The liner has a United-Carr chinstrap. All of the hardware throughout the helmet is covered in verdigris from the salty air and humidity of the Pacific. His navy jumper and pants feature decorative rainbow stitching, typical of Asiatic service of the time. I’m not sure if they would be considered true liberty cuffs, as there is no clear imagery, and rather simply stitching in patterns. Webb was a NASCAR fanatic and loved spending his summer months at the Indy 500. He was a proud member of Veteran Honor Flight, an organization which raises funds to fly American veterans to Washington DC, in order to visit the monuments and memorials decades to their service and lost comrades. I’ve attached some photographs of Webb and him family members. He is marked with an “X” above him in group photos. His brother was also a navy man. Webb passed away on June 26th, 2021 in Paddock Springs of Warsaw, Indiana. His beloved wife Alice passed away 7 months before in November of 2020. He was an active member in the Methodist Church and was proud to be involved with the local Mentone American Legion, as well as the Mentone Masonic Lodge. Though research is not yet complete, I figured I’d share nonetheless. I’d still like to uncover some more information on Butch Weber before this grouping finds a new home.
